Sell European Bank Stocks? – Part II

Gambar
I do not understand how European politicians think. Can’t they see the similarities between Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers on one hand and Greece and Ireland on the other? Or perhaps that’s what they are doing and that´s why they think it will all stop here? What then to make about AIG, Freddie Mae and all the other collapses in the US banking sector........ Very naive! I am sometimes thinking about how it would all play out if the politicians kept quiet, like the market. If they never responded to the market´s movements (or demands as journalists call them). What would happen if the politicians could move secretly from bail out package to bail out package and introduce bail ins and other new rules of the game without first informing the markets about them years in advance. What if they could stealth bomb just like the market does? Well, of course they cannot, and I just get this feeling of the entire game being tilted in favor of us investors...... Very nice! Another thing: Ir...

Paper Recommendation: Is it really different this time?

I would like to recommend a nice paper by Reinhart and Rogoff (2008), This Time is Different: A Panoramic View of Eight Centuries of Financial Crises The article ahs since become a book but the article is nice as well. It deals with five kinds of economic crises: (i) external default (ii) domestic default (iii) banking crises (iv) currency crashes (v) inflation outbursts The study covers many centuries of data and I find many interesting facts regarding crises. One of the more interesting parts of the paper is the one dealing with external versus domestic debt . For instance, the authors show that domestic debt has long been as significant as external debt in meeting emerging market financing needs. This is contrary to the common assumption today that emerging countries increasingly rely on domestic debt. Since I believe that the assumption possibly is one factor supporting the high valuations and low credit spreads in these countries this is an important finding. In addition, Reinhar...

The second edition of my book Finance!

Gambar
The second edition of my text book Finance – Markets, Instruments & Investments is now in print! The book is available here and (soon) here . The timing of the first edition was perfect (kind of...); it was printed three years ago and hit the bookshelves two months after the start of the financial crisis in the summer of 2007! I hope the financial system will undergo less change in the next three years than it did during the last three years……

Fixed Income relative value trading is back!

Gambar
For all of you who remember Long Term Capital Management , the huge hedge fund that collapsed in late 1998, it could be interesting to hear that their (original) trading strategy is back on track after more than a decade in the shadows! Long Term was the financial poster child of the 90s; the fund was managed by the famous Salomon Br. trader John Meriwether, it was co-run by J.M.s old Salomon friends Hilibrand, Haghani and Rosenfeld and, most impressively, had two Nobel laureates as partners, i.e. Merton and Scholes, the options pricing gurus! Long Term used complex models to make money on government bond prices in major countries converging over time. Of course, the pricing errors in US, Japan and EU government bond markets are typically extremely small so the trades had to be done with a lot of leverage to boost the returns. That was also the way Long Term liked to do it and their debt was often ten or twenty times their equity. Towards the end their leverage ratio was as high as 10...
